Duration of performance tests for growth rate, feed intake and feed efficiency in four biological types of beef cattle

چکیده

Data from the centralised performance tests for young beef bulls in South Africa were used to determine the minimum test duration required to obtain an accurate measure of feed intake, growth rate and two measures of feed efficiency: feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake. Five breeds from four different biological types were used to investigate whether different duration tests are required for different types of cattle. The results indicated that a test of between 42 and 56 days is sufficient for measurement of growth rate when a linear regression equation is used to model weight vs. time. Feed intake required approximately 56–70 days to measure accurately, while feed conversion ratio and residual feed intake both required around 70–84 days. There was little evidence of consistent breed differences in the time required to measure the traits, and it was concluded that the duration of performance tests could be shortened from 112 days to between 70 and 84 days for all breeds with no loss in accuracy of the test.  2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Test duration for growth, feed intake, and feed efficiency in beef cattle using the GrowSafe System.

This study was conducted to determine the optimum test duration and the effect of missing data on accuracy of measuring feed efficiency and its 4 related traits ADG, DMI, feed conversion ratio, and residual feed intake in beef cattle using data from 456 steers with 5,397 weekly averaged feed intakes and BW repeated measurements taken over 91 d. Data were collected using the GrowSafe System at t...

Residual Feed Intake: Animal Performance, Carcass Quality and Body Composition

Feed efficiency has a major influence on the unit cost of beef cattle production. Gibb and McAllister (1999) have reported that a 5% improvement in feed efficiency has an economic impact four times greater than a 5% improvement in average daily gain. In addition, the cost of feed is second only to fixed costs in importance to the profitability of commercial beef operations (Basarab, 1999). The ...

Phenotypic and genetic relationships of feeding behavior with feed intake, growth performance, feed efficiency, and carcass merit traits in Angus and Charolais steers.

Feeding behavior traits including daily feeding duration (FD), daily feeding head down time (HD), average feeding duration per feeding event (FD_AVE), average feeding head down time per feeding event (HD_AVE), feeding frequency (FF), and meal eating rate (ER) were analyzed to estimate their phenotypic and genetic correlations with feed intake, growth performance, residual feed intake (RFI), ult...

Systems genetics and genome-wide association approaches for analysis of feed intake, feed efficiency, and performance in beef cattle.

Feed intake, feed efficiency, and weight gain are important economic traits of beef cattle in feedlots. In the present study, we investigated the physiological processes underlying such traits from the point of view of systems genetics. Firstly, using data from 1334 Nellore (Bos indicus) cattle and 943,577 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), a genome-wide association analysis was performed ...

Defining Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle

Most breeding programs have focused on improving economically relevant output traits such as growth, carcass quality and fertility to enhance the economic viability of beef production systems. Generally absent from current breeding programs in the U.S. are avenues for exploiting genetic variation in feed efficiency, even though reductions in feed inputs would substantially improve profitability...
